Late prenatal or no prenatal care is a contributing factor in miscarriages, low birth-weight, and pre-term deliveries. The Birthing Project has recruited community volunteers called, Sister/Friends, to work with midwives and obstetricians to identify expectant mothers, navigate them to medical education and treatment services, and follow-up with case management to insure continuity of care. On August 25, 2008, the Newtown Health Advisory Council hosted a Seminar and Community Agencies Interactive led by Florida Midwife, Jenny Joseph. It was unanimously decided that a Birthing Project should be supported more collaboratively in Sarasota County.
